About 3DPhenome

3DPhenome is a data repository where researchers can find, download 3D and source image stack data representing current insects.

If you are an animal researcher, you can use 3DPhenome to locate and download 3D media for analysis, and to archive and share 3D media you have generated or are currently working on with collaborators, the community, and/or the public.

If you are an image processing or computer vision researcher, you can utilize the label and original image stack to test your algorithm to help biologist to accelerate CT model generation.

Amateurs from general public, 3DPhenome allows you to virtually explore the biological specimens from many views.

3DPhenome architecture, servers and data security

3Dphenome is hosted in Institute of Zoology(IOZ) net center.

3DPhenome is a complex system based on both browser/server and client/server architecture. The main image and model files are stored on one file server and the metadata are on one relation database server. The website of 3DPhenome is for data sharing. All data has been backed up and will be shared by CAS Earth System in the future.

We also developed a client for uploading and managing the original data to accelerate data transferring quality.

3DPhenome Funding

The developer Jiangning Wang created the initial database at 2016 just for storing and managing the micro-CT image stacks and the organ labels. In 2017, BIG and GEFMI obtain the support from the Strategic Priority Research Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Grant No. XDA19050203).

Staff & Human Resources

There are two research groups working on 3DPhenome. Biodiversity Informatics Group (BIG) is in charge of the technology of 3DPhenome. Group of Evolution and Functional Morphology of Insects (GEFMI) provides all kinds of insects’ micro-CT data and analysis.

Menghao Wang, website programmer.

Jiangning Wang, database and system designer and client programmer.

Xinyue Zhou, database manager and API programmer.

Wenjie Li, website content manager.

Jing Ren, Le Zong, data manager.

Siqin Ge, system manager.

3DPhenome in Three Years

The development work underway will help us do several things that users will notice:

1) improve the ability of researchers to quick obtain the organ model from source scanned data.

2) improve the diversity of 3D data that can be preserved.
